God Grew Tired Of Us

2006 Sundance Film Festival – Audience Award winner, Grand Jury Prize: Best Documentary

God Grew Tired of Us was released in 2007 by National Geographic Films after premiering at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize for best documentary and the Audience Award; it was narrated by Nicole Kidman.

The film tells the story of three young Southern Sudanese Dinka men – John Bul Dau, Daniel Pach and Panther Bior – who were forced to flee civil war in their native country. Thousands of “Lost Boys” walked thousands of miles together to find safety, and many died from starvation, dehydration, bomb raids and genocidal murder. Finally, they settle in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp, where the filmmakers meet them.

After 10 years of living in Kakuma, in 2001, the United States invites 3,600 Sudanese refugees to live in America and build a brighter future. Assisted by Catholic Charities International, the three boys uproot their lives and once again embark on a journey, leaving behind thousands of other refugees who, in the course of their traumatic odyssey, have become their adopted extended family. They learn to adapt to the shock of being thrust into the economically intense culture of the United States. They dedicate themselves to doing whatever they can to help those they left behind in Kakuma, and to discovering the fate of their parents and family.
